The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or “The T”, is the fifth largest transit agency in the USA. It operates bus, subway, commuter rail, ferry, and paratransit services in the Greater Boston area. Before the introduction of mobile ticketing, passengers using the commuter rail and ferry services had to wait in line at ticket vending machines or purchase paper tickets on-board with cash. The MBTA needed to update their ticketing options while minimizing the cost and expense of cash handling.
